The mission of Girl Scouts is to build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place, stated a Girl Scouts press release. That mission is what drives Girl Scout volunteer and other Girl Scout adult volunteers within Dare County to create opportunities for girls to join the movement. This fall, they held an ice cream social to introduce girls and parents to the world of Girl Scouting.
“During the fall we really push to bring in new members and bring our returning girls back as the school year opens and parents are planning their family schedules,” Denise Mann said. “We want Girl Scouts to be one of the activities they choose because of all the benefits. Girls can make new friends, build skills and do things they would not have an opportunity to do outside of Girl Scouting. Plus, badge work enhances what they are learning in the classroom.”
All girls in grades k-12 are invited to join and become involved as troop members or as Juliettes – the name for individual girl members. Juliettes can work on awards, attend events – both in person and virtually – sell cookies and do many things that girls do in troops. Some parents choose this program because of busy scheduling.
“There is so much for girls to do in Girl Scouts. Girls can earn badges in civics, coding, robotics, outdoors, and entrepreneurship,” stated the release. “In-person meetings are an option again, but virtual activities continue to be popular and have become a hybrid of the overall program. We meet the needs and interest of girls today and sometimes that will be virtually.”
